The course consists of a mInimum of 40 hours flying training, including 30 hours of dual flying (with an instructor) and 10 hours as PiC (Pilot in Command).

There is a final skills test of approximately 2.5 hrs duration.

Alongside the flying training, students complete 9 theoretical knowledge ground examinations, Theory study is completed through our online ground school provider, with examinations conducted at Merseyflight.

PPL(A)

The course consists of a mInimum of 15 hours dual flying training, including at least 10 hours with sole reference to instruments.

There is a skills test of approximately 1.5 hours duration.

There is no mandated theoretical knowledge training although the student will be required to study for the IMCR ground examination. Some classroom teaching may be required.

There is one ground examination.

The IMC Rating can only be issued once 25 hours of post-PPL(A) flying has been accumulated - which may include the IMC training.

The instrument flying training time can be credited towards the Competency Based Instrument Rating.

Before starting advanced training students need to build their experience, skills and hours. A minimum of 70 hours Pilot in Command (PiC) are required for the next training stage and at least 20 should be flown IFR to credit the CBIR course.

Structured skill building is essential and this can be completed in the UK with a Merseyflight 'Hour Builder' membership and/or in the USA with one of our all-inclusive packages.

Skill building should be conducted in parallel with your ATPL ground studies.

Training is divided into three modules. The CBT and relevant revision week for each module should be completed before sitting exams.

You will also need to attend a revision week – either online or in person – for each module of your training. ATPdigital lessons and tests must be completed for the module you are studying before revision course attendance.

At the end of each module, you can sit the exams associated with the module you are studying. There are a total of thirteen exams and you will have a maximum of six sittings to pass all of them, with no more than four attempts at any one subject.

You can sit your exams with BGS or at any UK CAA exam centre.

Exam fees are not included in the course cost. The UK CAA exams can be booked via the CAA website. 

The ATPL theory course with Bristol Groundschool will take around six to eighteen months to complete.

To apply you will need to have the unrestricted right to live and work in the UK, be a native English speaker (or equivalent IELTS Academic 5.5, or level 5 as per aviation standards) and hold a referral from your Flight Training ATO (to be uploaded during application), as well as:

• Hold a valid UK CAA Class 1 Medical.
• A strong performance in the UK CAA ATPL examinations (first-sitting results considered as part of the overall assessment)
• Be able to achieve UK CAA fATPL licence issue within the agreed timescale.
• Demonstrate a commitment to supporting and developing others.
• For Modular Trainees: Holds a valid UK CAA PPL

The ME CBIR course consists of a mInimum of 45 hours dual flying training with sole reference to instruments.

20 Hours Instrument Flying (IF) may be credited from the IMC Rating and IFR hour building.

Of the remaining 25 hours IF, at least 15 must be on a multi-engine aeroplane.

No additional ground school is mandated but this will be delivered as required on an individual basis.

The regulatory requirement is for the specified hours to be the minimum requirement whilst flying with sole reference to instruments whilst under instruction. The total course hours therefore also includes for taxi, departure, arrival and skills test.
